Accountability in design was a big concern for many of our respondents, especially those who work in data-sensitive industries such as financial services, healthcare, and technology. Many interviewees expressed a need for better foresight planning and technology understanding in order to anticipate potential impacts and prevent unintended consequences. In building a reputation for enforcing and defending values through ongoing customer-centric work, design can bring an ethical “checks and balances” mindset to corporate ethics conversations. Cognitive technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have topped the list of emerging technologies for planned CIO investment. AI, specifically, is seen as a technology that can increase productivity, strengthen regulatory compliance, and help organizations derive meaning from ever-growing datasets. It’s also a technology that stirs up fear and anxiety, as in an automated world humans will not fully occupy the driver’s seat (so to speak).
Communication
By pursuing rigorous research in an area that aligns with work by our PhD faculty, you’ll work directly in some of the most exciting design-focused work being done today. Program requires continuous full-time study at the Institute of Design for a minimum of four semesters (a minimum of five semesters for those in the M.Des. with the Foundation sequence). Students must enroll in at least 13.5 credit hours of coursework each semester. Completion of the Ph.D. program requires six semesters (107 credit hours) in addition to an existing master's degree.
Master of Design & Master of Public Administration (MDes + MPA)
Internal processes are shifting, as this new priority forces organizations to challenge traditional business flows and processes. Instead of designing social responsibility departments to compensate for unsustainable solutions, corporations are working to embed smart, sustainable, and inclusive growth into their production systems. Students pursuing these certificates typically complete them in the final year of their program. A separate application and admission to the Stuart School of Business is required to enroll, which students will submit during their first year of study at ID.
Chartered Accountant (CA) Exam
This course is for students who are interested in leading and facilitating multi-disciplinary collaborative projects using design as know-how to innovate. Students will learn design tactics and strategies for knowledge brokering through tutorials, examples, practical activities and simulations. This course examines research methods used throughout the design and development process from process, financial, and results standpoints with a focus on planning research activities. At ID, we prepare leaders to take on thorny, complex challenges in areas like sustainability, healthcare, education, business innovation, and urban life.

Explores a variety of digital fabrication tools alongside the language, limitations, and capabilities of contemporary and near-future digital manufacturing. This course will consider the relationship between theories and practice in the two very different realms of economics and design. The focus of this course is to gain familiarity with an underlying set of the principles and practices of ethnographic interviewing.
Particular emphasis goes to system modeling methods that facilitate designers to observe, describe, analyze, predict/envision, design, prototype, and evaluate behavior and performance of complex systems from different viewpoints. The class introduces the basic principles and methods for structuring complex information for effective understanding, identifying problems, and guiding solution development. This class teaches students how to use communication as a design method to accelerate synthesis and give tangible form to valuable information throughout the development process. Students are introduced to relevant theories of language, visual perception, visual representation, and communication. These courses are prerequisite for students without an undergraduate degree in industrial or communication design and must be completed prior to proceeding with any other M.Des.
Corporations are championing initiatives for ethical practices in the use of data and technology. They have also become more sensitive to the impact of their products on both society as a whole, and the individual. Governments around the world are working on policies to protect consumer data.
Through education and trainings based on groundbreaking research, we can offer your organization the unique perspectives necessary to see the opportunities and obstacles ahead, no matter your goals.

The exam tests candidates on advanced financial reporting, strategic financial management, and other complex subjects. CAT is a challenging exam for graduates aspiring to pursue higher education in Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). It assesses candidates' understanding of quantitative ability, data interpretation, verbal ability, and logical reasoning.
AI will encroach upon our agency—just one of the many unintended consequences organizations need to consider. As environments and people take on new characteristics, shift priorities, and demonstrate new skills, the organizations seeking to understand them must pay close attention. Through qualitative research, the ID student team identified seven trends that are currently shaping and challenging the field of design—and are likely to continue to be influential over the next five years. The Institute of Design at Illinois Tech (ID) released the Lead with Purpose report to highlight design’s central role in realizing executive vision. The research team set out to define the future roles of designers to forecast what design roles would look like in three to five years, and what skills individuals will need to fill those roles.
The 200-person community of graduate students, full-time and adjunct faculty, staff, and visiting researchers are very diverse yet share a common goal. From graduate students to the C-Suite, we help professionals use design as a lens to anticipate the speed, scale, and complexity of change in our lives. Our design process will help you seek out a diversity of perspectives, ask deeper questions, and resist easy answers. Along the way, you’ll challenge tired assumptions, expose issues embedded in the systems that drive daily life, and ultimately, reveal the larger opportunities that will make a difference. IIT Institute of Design's Doctor of Philosophy in Design is a top-rated graduate program for those seeking to teach or conduct fundamental research in the field of human-centered design. The National Institute of Design (NID) conducts a highly competitive entrance exam for admission to various undergraduate and postgraduate design programs.
In both professional and academic careers, there is an increased need for storytelling skills and self awareness. Creating passion-filled, compelling, and effective stories is a critical part of leadership. This course will build a series of non-mathematical models of success and failure in both entrepreneurial and corporate settings. Explore different established and emerging change management models and their application to design. This class covers methods and tools used in online research with a focus on the design of research objectives, implementation of their study protocol, and moderation of study participants.
In the 1960s, two decades before it was common, ID pioneered the use of computers to support analysis and synthesis in design. In the late 1980s, ID faculty noticed an increasing need for organizations to link their strategy to a deeper understanding of people. Thus, ID created areas of study in strategic design planning and human-centered design to complement traditional specialties like communication design and product design. As design addressed larger problems and increased its influence in various parts of organizations, it became evident that design needed a more formal body of knowledge.
Additional teachings include the basics of visual communication principles to aid in developing effective communications. Explores the language of diagrams as a communication means to represent different types of abstract, relational information. Students will be introduced to design principles of developing effective diagrams and multiple types of diagrams. This course will introduce how concepts from the field of behavioral economics can be thought of as another kind of "human factor" and ways in which they can help inform the process of design thinking. This course will examine traditional and emerging models for how large organizations and other corporate entities engage to develop innovative offerings. Readings will cover recent developments in cooperative and open-sourced forms of innovation development.
Includes a culminating project that demonstrates basic principles of screen design and computer-human interaction using a variety of media. Projects require use of common software applications for creating and editing six data types -- text, bitmap, geometry, sound, animation, and video. The Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) requires that all F-1 and J-1 students show proof of financial support for their first year of each program of university study in the United States.
Your time here will prepare you for your future, however you decide to make an impact. Students select a series of courses to meet their professional goals in consultation with their adviser. Courses may be chosen from any 500-level or 600-level IDN or IDX non-required course, and up to 12 credit hours from the 400-level Foundation courses (IDN 481–IDN 497), provided that those courses are not also applied as program prerequisites. Up to six credit hours may be taken outside of ID with the approval of the student's adviser.
